The Role of the VSIB

The Vehicle Security Installation Board, which was launched by the Home Office Minister of 27 June 1994, is the national regulatory and accreditation body for vehicle security installers and their installations.

Although set up by manufacturers and service organisations, the VSIB is entirely independent of them. It is administered by a small secretariat headed by a Chief Executive. It is self-financing and non-profit making. Its aim is to raise the standard of security installations and to assist in the fight against vehicle crime.

The role of the VSIB is to administer a Code of Practice drawn up by the various bodies (listed overleaf), which lays down the standards required to be met by vehicle security installers and the installations which they undertake.

How the VSIB operates

The VSIB operates a strict checking process of vehicle security installers. Firstly, each applicant installer has to supply information about themselves on an application form. Secondly they receive a detailed questionnaire to answer regarding their business and a copy of the Code of Practice with which they have to comply. Thirdly, they are required to undergo an inspection of their business by a VSIB Inspector. This involves the checking of their administration (e.g. whether they comply with legal requirements, have adequate public liability insurance cover etc.) and the checking of their premises, facilities, equipment, trained staff etc. Finally, if all requirements are met, the installer receives a Certificate of Accreditation, Rules with which to comply, and Certificates of Installation, which they must issue to their clients for each security installation, undertake. Even then an installer will have his work "spot checked" at any time to ensure that it is up to standard. VSIB Certificates of Installation are recognised by all supporters of the VSIB, which include Insurers, who require them to be produced for insurance premium discounts and theft claims settlement purposes.

All Certificates of Installation issued are recorded on a database by the VSIB. The data base will be used to help remind clients of the time when their equipment/installation should next be checked to see if it is still working properly, and for compiling statistics.

IF YOU HAVE A V.S.I.B CERTIFICATE THEN THE ANSWER IS YES!

Only a VSIB Accredited Installer can issue such a certificate.

Unless you choose your installer carefully even the most sophisticated security system could fail to protect your vehicle.

The Vehicle Security Installation Board, was established in 1994 to eliminate that risk. It provides the industry with a code of practice setting out professional standards for the installation of security equipment.

Make sure your installer has the ‘mark’; the V.S.I.B. mark. Proof enough that your system is properly installed and will work for you.
